Troubleshooting Common Packaging Bag Issues in Vacuum Sealing

Jun 23, 2025

This article addresses common issues encountered during vacuum sealing and packaging, such as improper cutting, seal tearing, pinholes, and vacuum failures. Each problem is analyzed with its causes and practical solutions to ensure high-quality packaging and minimize production downtime. Ideal for manufacturers and quality control teams in the food packaging industry.

Improper Bag Cutting

Issue: The bag sealing side cannot be cut properly.
Cause: Worn or loose cutting blade.
Solution: Inspect the blade, adjust it if loose, or replace it if worn. Regular maintenance of cutting equipment prevents recurrence.

Tearing at Seal Edge

Issue: Edges of the seal tear during packaging.

Cause: Product placed too close to the sealing line or excessively high sealing temperature.
Solution: Position the product 50–75 mm from the sealing line and lower the sealing temperature to an optimal level.

Tiny Holes Along Folded Edge

Issue: Tiny holes appear along the folded edge of the bag.
Cause: Manufacturing defect in the bag production process.
Solution: Switch to a different batch or box of bags and report the issue to quality control for further investigation.

Incomplete Bottom Sealing

Issue: Bottom sealing of bags is incomplete during production.
Cause: Improper sealing during manufacturing.
Solution: Replace the defective batch and notify the quality control department to address the manufacturing issue.

Worn or Torn Bags

Issue: Packaging bags become worn or torn.
Causes:

  • Accidental piercing by handlers.
  • Poor product flow in machinery.
  • Misaligned product on the pressing plate.
  • Hard products like salami or Parmigiano cheese.
  • Rough handling during transportation.
Solution: Train handlers on careful loading, ensure smooth product flow, align products correctly, and use appropriate bags for hard products. Improve transportation handling practices.

Side Seal Tearing

Issue: The sealed edge tears on one side.
Cause: Bag caught by the vacuum chamber lid during vacuuming.
Solution: Center the bag in the vacuum machine, keeping it at least 50 mm from the inner wall to avoid contact with the lid.

Pinholes in Bags

Issue: Pinholes appear in packaging bags.
Cause: Mechanical impact from burrs or sharp edges in the bag-loading area, conveyors, or other equipment.
Solution: Inspect and smooth out sharp edges in equipment like belts, tunnels, or press plates. If pinholes exist pre-use, report to the factory for quality issues.

Meat in Sealing Area

Issue: Meat enters the sealing area, preventing proper sealing.
Cause: Improper placement of product or bag.
Solution: Ensure the sealing zone is clear of meat by correctly positioning the product and bag before sealing.

Vacuum Failure Due to Bag Mouth Pullback

Issue: Vacuum failure occurs when one side of the bag mouth is pulled back.
Cause: Bag mouth misaligned behind the sealing line, often due to a bag that’s too short.
Solution: Position the bag correctly on the sealing line and use a bag of appropriate size for the product.

Shrink Bags Punctured by Bones

Issue: Shrink bags are punctured by bones.
Causes:

  • Inadequate bone guard coverage.
  • Incorrect bag type for bone-in products.
  • Contact with obstacles post-packaging.
  • Sharp or broken bones.
  • Stacking bone-in products before boxing.
  • Unprotected bones hitting hard surfaces.
  • Careless boxing practices.
  • Unpolished or sharp bone surfaces.

Solution: Use proper bone guards, select suitable bags, avoid post-packaging obstacles, and ensure careful boxing with bone-in side facing up. Polish sharp bones before packaging.
