Resolving Common Vacuum Sealing Issues with Shrink Bags

Jun 23, 2025

Vacuum Failure Due to Bag Mouth Pullback

Issue: Vacuum failure occurs when one side of the bag mouth is pulled back.
Cause: The upper side of the bag is pulled beyond the sealing line, often due to a bag that is too short.
Solution: Ensure the bag is properly placed on the sealing line. If the bag is too short, switch to a bag of the correct size. Train operators to align bags accurately.

Wrinkles in Sealing Area

Issue: Wrinkles appear in the sealing area of the bag mouth.
Causes:

  • Operator fails to flatten the bag tail on the seal bar.
  • Bag is too wide, causing folding by the seal bar or operator.
  • Bag tail not straightened, or product pulled too close to the seal bar.
  • Bag not laid flat during heat sealing.

Solution:Train operators to lay the shrink bag flat and straight across the sealing line. Ensure the bag width matches the seal bar and avoid pulling the product too close to the sealing area. Regularly check operator techniques to prevent wrinkles.

Incomplete Sealing at Bag Mouth

Issue: Sealing at the bag mouth is incomplete.
Causes:

  • Bag not fully placed on the seal bar.
  • Bag width mismatched with seal bar.
  • Burnt or worn Teflon tape on seal bar.
  • Damaged sealing valve seat or rubber.
  • Bag tail not pulled past the pressure bar.
  • Product too long or tall for bag or chamber.
  • Incorrect temperature settings.
  • Contamination (e.g., blood, fat) in seal area.
  • Product size mismatch with bag.
  • Dull or chipped sealing blade.

Solution:Verify bag placement and size compatibility with the seal bar. Replace worn Teflon tape or damaged valve components. Adjust temperature settings and clean the seal area of contaminants. Ensure the product fits the bag and chamber, and sharpen or replace the sealing blade as needed.

Vacuum Failure or Low Vacuum Causes

Issue: Vacuum failure or low vacuum when using shrink bags.
Causes:

  • Operational Issues:
    • Vacuum not activated.
    • Obstruction preventing chamber closure.
    • Incorrect bag size (too large or small).
    • Machine cycle too fast.
    • Insufficient bag shrinkage.
    • Blocked chamber filter.
  • Maintenance Issues:
    • Tripped vacuum pump blower.
    • Frozen vacuum piping due to insufficient heat.
    • Restricted machine valve.
    • Vacuum leaks at piping connections.
    • Open exhaust valve.
    • Damaged diaphragm.
    • Clogged vacuum pump filter.
    • Broken chamber hose.
    • Misaligned chamber or pressure plate.
    • Gasket gaps or hairline cracks in pressure plate.
    • Dry rotary valve or low pump oil.
    • Blocked bag opening due to front pressure.
    • Air blown back into chamber from air-cooled seal bar.
    • Defective air knives.
    • Excessive seal bar pressure.
    • Inadequate cooling (water or air).
    • Incorrect heat-sensitive tape.
    • Poor diaphragm quality.
    • Incorrect sealing timing.
    • Misaligned seal bar.
    • Insufficient sealing pressure causing bag movement.
    • Dirty slip ring.
    • Clogged sealing ring or vacuum pump filter.

Solution:

  • Check operational settings: Ensure vacuum is on, remove chamber obstructions, use correctly sized bags, adjust cycle speed, and verify bag shrinkage. Clean or replace chamber filters.
  • Perform maintenance checks: Inspect vacuum pump components, ensure proper oil levels in the pump and rotary valve, repair leaks, replace damaged hoses or diaphragms, and align chamber and pressure plates. Adjust seal bar pressure and timing, clean slip rings, and ensure proper cooling systems. Regularly maintain equipment to prevent clogs and misalignments.
